Walt Whitman is perhaps the best known poet of the civil war era. He worked as a nurse during the civil war and traveled far and wide in America while journaling his travels in poetry. His life's inspiration titled "Leaves of Grass" inspires poets and writers everywhere, and will continue to do so for generations to come.

He is mentioned in the film Dead Poets Society starring Robin Williams for what might be his most famous poem ever "Oh Captain, My Captain" regarding the death of Abraham Lincoln.
